WHEN LIVERPOOL BROUGHT SYDNEY TO A HALT
In 1964 The Beatles traveled to Australia for their first and only tour. At the time, all the best and brightest stars in the entertainment galaxy stayed at one hotel, The Chevron Hilton Hotel in Kings Cross. This was Sydney’s only first Five Star international hotel. The “Silver Spade” dining room, was on the first floor, as this was the hotel’s main restaurant. It had an elegantly expensive atmosphere with chandeliers and mirrors and silver decor. Fur clad ladies came to hear the great stars of the day such as Englebert Humperdinck, Tom Jones, Dusty Springfield, Tony Bennett or Sergio Mendes. But even so, hotel management refused the Beatles booking as they didn’t want any disruption to the hotel and their guests. The management assumed they would be overrun by girls and the screaming would annoy patrons. The Beatles instead rented an apartment in the Sebel Town House apartments opposite, meaning the hundreds of screaming girls had stand in front of the Chevron’s entrance to catch a glimpse of them waving from the balcony across the road.
